Literacy and English

  • Literacy is the ability to read and write, but also includes skill like critical thinking, listening, speaking, viewing and presenting. Strong literacy skills are central to success across all areas of the curriculum and essential for success after school.

  • Based on extensive research, Madeley Primary school staff implement whole school approaches to teaching literacy across the different modes. Teachers employ Literacy Blocks and Explicit Teaching strategies with the support of resources such as First Steps, Letters and Sounds and Words Their Way. Staff are continually embedded in professional learning surrounding these essential resources in order to gain maximum benefits.

We believe that a balanced Literacy program is best achieved when:

  • using evidence based approaches.

  • incorporating Literacy Blocks into our daily programming.

  • explicitly teaching the skills of Literacy-reading, writing, spelling, speaking and listening, viewing.

  • providing print rich classrooms.

  • ensuring 50% of teaching time is spent on Literacy and Numeracy.

  • integrating Literacy across other learning areas.

  • providing purposeful learning experiences.

  • collaborating approaches, strategies and ideas with colleagues.

  • monitoring student progress.

  • teaching to and addressing students needs, levels and abilities.

  • integrating ICT.
