School Vision
Courageous learners,
Caring people.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and carers,
Term 2 has been an incredibly busy and productive term. Students and staff have worked tirelessly throughout the term and are all looking forward to the upcoming break. With holidays drawing near I want to the take the opportunity to remind you we rely on the community for support to keep our school secure and safe during the holiday period. Parents are asked to keep an eye on our school during the holiday period and report any suspicious behaviour to Education Security on 9264 4632 or Police 131 444. The Education Security phone number is also on signage around the outside of the school fencing.

Kindy 2024 Enrolments
Another reminder that Kindy 2024 enrolments close on Friday 21 July, which is the end of week 1 next term. If you know of anyone whose child is born between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020, please let them know that enrolments close soon. As Kindergarten is a non-compulsory year at school, we make plans for how classes are structured based on the number of students enrolled as of the closing date. Sometimes there may still be places available for latecomers however, we don’t always have the space to accommodate them. Therefore, lodging enrolments before the closing date is of paramount importance.
School Reports
This semester’s reports will be emailed out on Monday 26th June. Please ensure that your email contact details are up to date. We will be sending PP – 6 reports both by email and via Connect. Kindy reports are only available via email. The email link is only active for two weeks, so please ensure that you download the reports as soon as you receive them.
Voluntary Contributions and Charges 2023
A very big thank you to all parents who have paid their contributions and charges. This funding supports the purchase of school resources for all learning areas as well as the library. We will be holding a prize draw for families who have paid their contributions before the end of term, with a $200 gift card being the prize. The draw will be held next week. Winners will be notified by phone.
Parking
The safety of our students is critical to us at MPS. Safe and legal parking is an ongoing issue at our school, therefore we remind all parents to do the right thing by driving and parking safely and legally around our school. Kiss-and-Drive bays are not for parking and should be vacated as quickly as possible so as to maintain the flow of traffic. Parking in the driveway of the Kindergarten car park or on pathways around the school is illegal and results in safety concerns as well as damaged cars. Please be patient and wait until a car bay becomes available. Patience, kindness and respect are all virtues to model when driving and parking around our school.
I hope all families enjoy a wonderful school holiday break. We look forward to seeing you all again on Tuesday 18th July 2023.
Kind regards
Lainie Beccegato

Yr 5/6 Winter Lightning Carnival
Our Year 5/6 students took part in the annual Interschool Winter Lightning Carnival on Thursday 15th June. We played against Ashdale, Landsdale, Carnaby Rise and West Greenwood in Soccer, AFL Football, Netball and Hockey. Although we did not win any of the competitions, we won many matches across the sports and our students displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day. Well done to all of our Year 5/6 students on the great way that you represented Madeley Primary School.
Science Cultural Learning
On Tuesday 30th May, during Reconciliation Week, I was invited, by Aboriginal Elder Ms Carol Foley, to attend Roseworth Primary School to participate in learning how to make a Daap (Aboriginal cutting tool). A Daap was used by Aboriginal people to cut up meats and skin animals for clothing.
Watching, listening and participating in a Two Way Science lesson run by Ms Foley, I learned about the materials used to make a Daap - Yonga goona (Kangaroo poo), Balga tree resin, and charcoal. The ingredients were then crushed using rocks, mixed together and with heat added this makes a very strong adhesive. By slowly heating a stick, adding it to the mixture you can build up this adhesive onto the stick and then add a rock for the cutting part. Culturally, making these tools was a male activity but Ms Foley had special permission to make them and permitted me the chance to make my own. It was amazing to experience and see how the First Nations people were able to use Science in their everyday living. Ms Foley has offered to come to our school and work with some classes on making Daaps so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that news in the coming terms.
Ms Foley also spent time teaching me some Noongar words that I have been using in my class since and more will follow with the Science lessons. I am excited to bring more culture into the Science lab so again keep a watch out for some exciting things.
This was an amazing opportunity and I hope that I can do more of this learning. A big thank you to Ms Carol Foley for the invite, Mrs Louise Neilsen (Roseworth Principal) and Mrs Beccegato for allowing me to attend and Mrs Anna Keunen (Roseworth Science teacher) for having me in her class during the experience.
Mr Keunen

School Nurse
Vision and Eyes
Good vision is important for learning and quality of life. Watch for any of the following in your child:
- covering/closing one eye when reading
- holding books very close
- complaining of eyestrain or headache
- complaining of double vision or blurred vision with reading or board viewing
- complaining of words moving on a page
- losing place when reading, or skipping words and lines
- inattention or short attention span when reading, or
- rubbing the eyes.
Please note: Medicare covers the cost of an eye examination.
If you have a concern about your child’s vision please contact a doctor, optometrist or your local Community Health Nurse.
Screen Time
Children and adolescents should not spend more than two hours a day on screen based activities. Excessive screen time often leads to poor health, poor fitness and overweight.
Activities like surfing the net, social networking, watching TV and playing screen games can be educational and fun, but all involve sitting still for long periods of time. Set family rules around screen time and encourage your child to try a range of active pastimes, especially during daylight hours.
